About Me

I’ve had a winding path that’s ended up with me working in public tax for the last five years. I grew up in central Pennsylvania, where I attended Penn State and obtained an English degree with the intent to become a librarian.

I graduated into the recession, and decided grad school wasn’t the best idea, so I detoured into the Air Force where I worked as an F-15 avionics technician for 6 years. During this time I met my wife and settled in Boise, ID by the time my enlistment was up.

I enrolled at Boise State to study accounting, and quickly decided I wanted to work in tax.

Why Tax?

One question accounting students frequently ask is “how did you now you wanted to work in tax versus audit?” The answer is different for everyone. For many it boils down to having in internship in one or the other and favoring one (or disliking one more than the other). For me, it came down to the fact that I felt I could sit down and describe what a tax return was to someone, but I sure as heck couldn’t put describe an audit succinctly. If I couldn’t explain something easily I surely didn’t want to spend my career doing it.

I’ve since had some more experience around audit work, and I feel I have more understanding of what goes into an audit, but I still feel I’ve made the right choice for me. As boring as it sounds, I enjoy working in tax.

Tax can be demanding, challenging, and rewarding. I’m always learning something new through encountering new problems and doing research to support my positions. Each tax season evolves from the previous as tax law changes, my career advances, and I continue to challenge myself.

Why did I start an accounting blog?

I’m not entirely sure. Maybe you can let me know.
